Samael is also depicted as the angel of death and one of the seven archangels, the ruler over the Fifth Heaven and commander of two million angels such as the chief of all the destroying angels.  In the Kabbalah, Samael is described as the "severity of God," and is listed as fifth of the archangels of the world of Briah.

In some texts, Samael is seen as a fallen angel but still in the service of God, carrying out grim duties such as destroying sinners.  However, the lore surrounding Samael is not established canon, and there is much variation in the descriptions and roles attributed to him across different traditions and texts.

Samael has rulership over two astroligical Signs and Elements.
